What causes CCN?
Vitamin B1/thiamine deficiency
An animal with CCN may present dull, disorientated, blind with tremors, convulsions and opisthotonus. What in the history may have caused the onset of CCN?
Diet change or worming
Alters thiaminase production in rumen
What is the treatment for CCN? Does it resolve?
Vitamin B1 - slow IV or IM over 3 days
Vision returns within 1 week
How can CCN be prevented?
Avoid sudden diet changes (prevent altering thiaminase production in rumen)
What causes Gid?
Coenuris cerebralis
Intermediate/larval phase of Taenia multiceps
What is the primary host for Gid (Coenuris cerebralis)?
Dogs
What are the clinical signs seen with gid and how is it treated?
Circling, head tilt, unilateral blindness, skull softening
Surgical removal
What is the prognosis of gid?
Good if cerebral
Poor if cerebellar
How can gid be prevented?
Worm dogs regularly with praziquantel
Keep dogs away from sheep carcasses
Listeriosis is caused by Listeria monocytogenes found in contaminated or mouldy silage. What age is Listeria common in?
18-24 months
Changing molar teeth allow buccal infection - ascends into brainstem
What cranial nerves may be affected by listeriosis?
Trigemial nerve - salivation, food impaction in cheek
Facial nerve - paralysis
How is Listeriosis diagnosed?
CSF or post-mortem
How is Listeriosis treated?
Supportive care
Remove silage
Benzylpenicillin, procaine penicillin, dexamethasone
