Neurological Flashcards
What can cause the feeling of lightheaded, swimming sensation like feeling faint
Syncope: a sudden loss of strength and temporary loss of consciousness, caused by lack of cerebral blood flow . Occurs with low bp
What is vertigo? What causes it?
True sensation of rotational spinning, caused by neurological disease in the vestibular apparatus in ear or vestibular nuclei in brain stem
Seizures occur with _______
Epilepsy
What is epilepsy?
a paroxysmal disease characterized by altered or loss of consciousness, involuntary muscle movements and sensory disturbances
What is aura?
A subjective sensation that occurs before a seizure; could be auditory, visual or motor
What is a tremor?
An involuntary shaking, vibrating or trembling
What is paresis?
weakness of voluntary movements or impaired movement
What is paralysis?
Loss of motor function as a result of a lesion in the neurological or muscular system or loss of sensory innervation
What is dysmetria?
The inability to control range of motion muscles
What is paraesthesia?
Abnormal sensation of burning or tingling on a body part
What is dysarthria?
Difficulty forming words
What is dysphasia?
Difficulty with language comprehension on expression
*note difference between dysphasia and dysphagia (swallowing issues)
In regards to the neurological system, what medications should we be reviewing when we are asking about health history?
- Anticonvulsants
- Antitremor
- Antivertigo
- Pain medications
What can cause staggering with position change in older adults?
Diminished cerebral blood flow and diminished vestibular response
In men, what is it called when they feel faint when standing up to urinate at night
Micturition syncope
