What should be done if a patient describes sudden change in vision and what could it mean?
Can mean acute ocular emergency and should receive immediate ophthalmic evaluation
What are floaters? What causes them?
- Look like spots moving in front of the eyes
- Caused by myopia or middle age people as result of condensed vitreous fibres
What can acute onset of floaters be caused by?
Retinal detachment
What disease would the symptoms of halos occur?
Occur with acute narrow-angled glaucoma
Scotoma is_____
a blind spot in the visual field surrounded by an area of normal or decreased vision
What disease does scotoma occur with?
glaucoma and optic nerve/visual pathway disorders
What does night blindness occur from?
optic atrophy, glaucoma and vitamin A deficiency
What are some concerning sudden onset eye symptoms that may indicate emergency?
Pain, floaters, blind spot, loss of peripheral vision
What is photophobia?
inability to tolerate life
What are some eye diseases that do not cause pain?
Refractive errors, cataracts and glaucoma
What is strabismus?
deviation in the anterior posterior axis of the eye
What is diplopia?
perception of two images of a single object
What is lacrimation? What is epiphora?
tearing, excessive tearing
What is purulent discharge? Describe
Thick and yellow discharge from the eye, forms crust over night
Why would we ask if the patient has a history of injury, surgery to eye or allergies
Allergens may cause irritation to conjunctiva or cornea
