For most neurologic maneuvers in term infants, which should be more prominent: Flexion or Extension?
For all maneuvers, flexion should always exceed extension.
Describe the Moro reflex.
Baby in supine position with the hands abducted, and gently pull them until the shoulders are lifted a few inches off the bed; the infant’s hands are then released.
Normal - baby to rapidly abduct and extend its arms, followed by complete oepning of the hands
Appears at 28-32 weeks and disappears completely by 3-4 months of age.
Describe the grasp reflex.
Examiner’s fingers are inserted into the baby’s hands to evaluate flexion of the fingers around the examiner’s finger. The baby is then lifted while holding the examiner’s finger with a palmar grasp.
What standard tendon reflexes does a newborn exhibit?
Biceps, knee, and ankle reflexes
Is ankle clonus abnormal in a newborn?
No, it is normal for some ankle clonus.
