Neurogenic Shock Flashcards
1
Q
What type of shock is neurogenic shock?
A
It is distributive shock.
2
Q
What is neurogenic shock?
A
hypoperfusion due to loss of neural control of blood vessels
3
Q
What can cause neurogenic shock?
A
anything that impacts the vasomotor control centre, for example:
- CNS trauma
- hypoglycemia
- hypoxia
- drugs (ex. anesthetics)
4
Q
What is the pathophysiology of neurogenic shock?
A
- vasomotor centre defect
- leads to sympathetic output to vessels being impaired
- leads to loss of vessel tone
- leads to vasodilation
- leads to hypoperfusion
5
Q
The pathology of neurogenic shock is similar to what two other types of shock?
A
- anaphylactic shock
- septic shock
6
Q
What are the manifestations of neurogenic shock?
A
- hypotension
- bradycardia (sympathetic nervous system output is impaired)
- dry, warm skin (b/c sympathetic output affected, no vasoconstriction)
7
Q
How is neurogenic shock treated?
A
- restore sympathetic nervous system control
- in the meantime, may need to increase blood volume (IV fluids, anti-diuretics)
