Q

What can cause neurogenic shock?

A

anything that impacts the vasomotor control centre, for example:

  • CNS trauma
  • hypoglycemia
  • hypoxia
  • drugs (ex. anesthetics)

Q

What is the pathophysiology of neurogenic shock?

A
  • vasomotor centre defect
  • leads to sympathetic output to vessels being impaired
  • leads to loss of vessel tone
  • leads to vasodilation
  • leads to hypoperfusion

Q

What are the manifestations of neurogenic shock?

A
  • hypotension
  • bradycardia (sympathetic nervous system output is impaired)
  • dry, warm skin (b/c sympathetic output affected, no vasoconstriction)

Q

How is neurogenic shock treated?

A
  • restore sympathetic nervous system control

- in the meantime, may need to increase blood volume (IV fluids, anti-diuretics)
