Neurodynamics Flashcards
what is the protective tissue around peripheral nerves that is often the first thing damaged?
mesoneurium
median N distribution in hand
palmer surface of palm and thumb, pointer, middle and half of ring finger. Dorsal finger tips of thumb, pointer, middle and half of ring finger also
how do u test median N?
ULNT1 , ULNT 2, (1 is general UE N test, 2 is specific for med. N)
what is the ULNT1?
sonic waitress, depress shoulder and press fingers down into hyperextension with palm up
what is ULNT 2, Mb
arm straight down at side, full ER, then extend wrist and fingers in as much as possible to touch thigh
what is the largest unprotected N in body?
Radial N.
radial N distribution
dorsal side of UE all the way to hand, does the dorsal surface of hand from thumb to half of ring finger, but not the tips (thats med.)
how do u test radial N?
ULNT 2 for median branch
what is ULNT 2, Rb?
arm straight down at side, full IR, flex fingers into fist and then flex wrist away form thigh
ulnar N. distribution
dorsal and volar aspects of medial half of ring finger to pinky, from finger tips to break in wrist.
how do u test ulnar nerve?
ULNT 3
what is ULNT 3?
like u are going to do the ok eyeglasses with that hand, then the person flattens out the hand and pushes it back into further wrist ext.
sciatic N distribution?
back of thigh to pop. fossa
test for sciatic?
basic SLR
test for tibial N?
SLR with DF,
pain in lateral ankle, heel, calf, foot
test for surral N?
SLR with DF and Inversion!
Test for common peroneal N?
SLR with PF and inversion
femoral N distribution?
ant and inner thigh, medial half of lower leg to medial malleolus
test for femoral N?
prone knee bending (looks like ely’s test)
what is the opposite of the autonomic NS and what does it do?
somatic NS
- voluntary movement
- all senses
- reflexes
how long does it take in immobilization for degenerative changes to begin occuring in the myelin sheath around NN?
3 weeks, after 16 weeks, decrease in fiber diameter= Nerves less flexible, more resistant to tensile forces= less ROM!
key words to listen for when pts describe nerve pain
dry woody ants crawling pulling tight catching clumps of pain dragging swelling burning shooting electric traveling
neural tension test
slump
in a slump, how do u tell if it’s neural tension or neural tethering?
if raising of head or PF of foot eases pain, then its tension, if its the same, it’s tethered, the nerve is stuck somewhere.
