neurocutaneous diseases / brain tumor Flashcards
neurocutaneous disorders - type
- Sturge-Weber syndrome
- Tuberous sclerosis
- Neurofibromatosis type 1 (von Recklinhhausen disease)
- von Hippel-Lindau disease
von Hippel-Lindau disease - manifestations
- hemangioblastomas in retina, brain stem, cerebellum, spine
- angiomatosis (cavernous hemangiomas in skin, mucosa, orgnas)
- bilateral renal cell carcinoma
- pheochromocytomas
Neurofibromatosis type 1 - manifestation
- cafe-au-lait spots
- Lisch nodules (pigmented iris hamartomas )
- cutaneous neurofibromas: soft, flesh-clored lesions attached to peripheral nerves)
- optic gliomas
- pheochromocytomas
- meningiomas and gliomas
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (von Recklinghausen Disease)
- There is no specific treatment
- Eight CN lesions may need surgical decompression to help preserve hearing
tuberous sclerosis - manifestations
- Hamartomas (in CNS and skin) 2. Angiofibromas
- Mitral regurgitation 4. ash leaf spots 5. cardiac rhabdomyomas 5. Metal retardation 6. renal angimyolipoma 7. seizures 8. Shangreen patches
- high incidence of subependymal astrocytomas and ungual fibromas
ADENIMA SEBACUM (REDDENED FACIAL NODULES)
tuberous sclerosis - increased incidence of
subependymal astrocytomas and ungual fibromas
tuberous sclerosis - treatment
no specific treatment
control seizures g
Struge - weber syndrome - manifestation
- nevus flammeus 2. ipsilateral leptomeningeal angioma 3. intellectual disability 4. episcleral hemangioma
- early onset glaucoma 6. epilepsy/seizures
- -> seizures, homonymous hemianopasia, hemiparesis
Struge - weber syndrome - image + treatment

Adult primary brain tumors - types
- Glioblastoma multiforme (grade IV astrocytoma)
- Meningioma
- Hemangioblastoma
- Schwannoma
- Oligodendroglioma
- Pituitary adenoma
Childhood primary brain tumors - types
- Pilocytic (low grade) astrocytoma
- Medulloblastoma
- Ependymoma
- Craniopharyngioma
- pinealoma
Glioblastoma multiforme - median survival / behavioral / frequency / found in
median surv: 1 year
behavioral: highly malignant primary brain tumor
frequency: common
found in cerebral hemisphere
can cross corpus callosum (butterfly glioma)
Hemangioblastoma - most often area / can produce / associated with
cerebellum
EPO
VHL
pilocytic (low grade) astrocytoma - benign or malignant?
prognosis? / area
Benign / good prognosis
most often found in posterior fossa (eg. cerebellum)
May be supratentorial
ependymoma - area / prognosis
most commonly found in 4th ventricle
poor prognosis
