Neurocognitive Disorders Flashcards
Can delirium be a symptoms and a diagnosis ?
Yes it can be both.
What are the key components of Delirium?
Marked disturbance in attentions and reduced awareness of the environment. CAN BE CURED This develops abruptly over hours/days. Rapid unpredictable shift in emotions, common disturbance of sleep wake cycle, and emotional disturbances.
What are the symptoms of Delirium?
- inability to focus
- do not know day/time
- disoriented
- memory issues
can be a sign of DEHYDRATION
What is the difference between mild and major neurocognitive disorders?
A difference in significant decline in an individuals functioning.
What are the key components of Mild Neurocognitive Disorder?
A modest decline in cognitive domains meaning that there is NO INTERFERENCE with ADLS but may require the sure of compensatory strategies. early onset middle age, late onset older adults 85+
What are the key components of Major Neurocognitive Disorder?
Major decline in cognitive domains. Significant decline in ADLs and IADLs. This is managed through medication. early onset middle age, late onset older adults 85 + More diagnosis with dementia.
What are the key components of Vascular Dimension?
A type of dementia that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, damaging brain cells and causing a decline in mental function.
What are the symptoms of Vascular Dimension?
- deficits in attention
- frontal and executive function deficits
What are the key components of Alzheimer’s?
A brain disorder that gradually disorders that destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually the ability to perform simple tasks.
What is the most common cause of Dementia?
Alzheimers disease
it disproportionally affects women and ethnic minorities
What are the cognitive domains affected in Alzheimers disease?
memory rapid forgetting and language
What is significance of the symptoms in Vascular Dimension
need to follow major vascular events such as stroke and mini stroke. (affects attention and processing speed)
mini strokes may happen during assessments
Can we diagnose vascular dimension without a vascular event?
No
What is necessary for major neurocognitive disorders?
Considering the support needed for caregivers due to the significance in decline
Will Alzheimers look different in those who are educated?
yes. They have a buffering effect due to cognitive reserve in the level of information that is accumulated over time. However there will be a significant and noticeable decline
