What is EPSP?

bring +ve IONS into cell

A

brings +ve ions into cell.
+ ve ions > small depolarisation – EPSP ( not enough for Act .Pot.)

What is IPSP ?

-95mVs

A

Inhibitory Post Synaptic Potential : Norm= -95mVs

-ve ions into cell > small hyperpolarization – IPSP: won’t produce Act. Pot ( pot. Goes down more !)

  • (IPSPs) reduce the likelihood of ACT POT by lowering the mV at the axon hillock

Where does integrations of polarities occur?

Hillock!

A

AXON HILLOCK: neuron will only fire if the hillock has an overall increase in positive charge (that exceeds the excitability threshold )

  • Neural integration: sum of the EPSP and IPSPs where increases in mV above the excitability threshold result in an action potential
