Neuroblastoma Flashcards
What is the Somatic Nervous System responsible for?
Voluntary control
What does the Autonomous Nervous System control?
Involuntary bodily functions
What response is associated with the Sympathetic nervous system?
Fight or flight response
What is Neuroblastoma?
An embryonal malignancy of the sympathetic nervous system arising from neuroblasts
What are the most common sites for Neuroblastoma?
- Adrenal medulla (35%)
- Paraspinal ganglia in abdomen or pelvis (25%)
- Thoracic region (15%)
- Head and Neck primary (5%)
What are the three types of tumours related to Neuroblastoma?
- Ganglioneuroma – benign
- Ganglioneuroblastoma – intermediate
- Neuroblastoma – malignant
What is the typical appearance of Neuroblastoma cells?
‘Small round blue cell’ composed of dense nests of hyperchromatic cells
What is the most common extracranial pediatric solid tumour?
Neuroblastoma
What is the male-to-female ratio in Neuroblastoma cases?
1.2 : 1
Define an oncogene.
A gene that regulates the development and growth of cancer cells
Which oncogene is associated with Neuroblastoma?
MYCN
What is the significance of MYCN amplification in Neuroblastoma?
Associated with aggressive growth and poor prognosis
What is Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK)?
A gene related to neuroblastoma and associated with poorer survival
What is Neurofibromatosis?
A genetically inherited condition where nerve tissue grows non-cancerous tumours
