Neurobiology: Perception of Stimuli Flashcards
What are receptors?
Cells that detect a stimulus/change in environment
What are thermoreceptors?
Receptors that respond to heat energy.
What are photoreceptors?
Receptors that respond to light energy.
What are chemoreceptors?
Receptors that respond to chemical substances.
What are mechanoreceptors?
Receptors that respond to forces and movement.
How do receptors send electrical impulses to the brain?
Receptors contain proteins in their membrane which complementary bind with a specific chemical, inducing an electrical impulse that is sent to the brain.
What are ossicles?
Bones in the middle ear that amplify sound vibrations received from the eardrum, by up to 20 fold.
What makes up the ossicles?
The malleus, incus, stapes (MISo (ossicles))
How do the ossicles amplify and reduce sound vibrations?
The ossicle amplifies sound vibrations received from the ear drum as the bones vibrate on each other. In loud noises, the bones can separate so that less vibrations occur, transmitting fewer vibrations to prevent ear damage.
