Neurobiology: Parts and Functions of the Brain Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus accumbens?
It has a central role for the reward pathway, responsible for releasing hormones such as dopamine.
What is the function of the Broca’s area?
Broca’s area controls the production of speech and enables us to communicate what we are thinking.
What is the function of the Medulla Oblongata?
Controls autonomic functions such as breathing, swallowing and heart rate.
What is the function of the Visual Cortex?
Receives, integrates and processes visual information from the retinas.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
The cerebellum is responsible for balance and co-ordination.
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Synthesises hormones and responsible for most of homeostasis such as osmoregulation and body temperature.
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
Releases hormones synthesised by the hypothalamus into the blood stream.
What is the function of the left and right cerebral hemispheres?
Responsible for higher-order functions such as reasoning, memory and calculations
What is the function of the corpus callosum?
Connects the two cerebral hemispheres and exchanges information between them.
What are the four lobes of the cerebral cortex?
Temporal, frontal, parietal, occipital lobe. (the fat pig of China(cerebellum))
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
Responsible for auditory processing, language comprehension and memory retrieval.
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Responsible for speech production, motor control and reasoning.
What is the function of the parietal lobe?
Responsible for touch sensation.
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Responsible for visual perception, integration and processing.
