Neurobiology: Human Brain A2 Flashcards
What part of the neural tube forms the brain?
Anterior part of the neural tube
Which side of the brain controls muscle contraction in the right side of the body?
The left cerebral hemisphere
Which hemisphere of the brain receives sensory inputs from the left side of the body and the left side of the visual field in both eyes?
The right cerebral hemisphere
What brain structures develop from the forebrain?
Cerebrum and Thalamus
What brain structures develop from the hindbrain?
Pons, Cerebellum, Medulla Oblongata
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Controls involuntary processes such as heart rate, breathing, blood flow.
What does the sympathetic and parasympathetic system make up?
Divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)
What does the sympathetic system do?
Speeds up involuntary processes (e.g. increasing heart rate). Mobilises body systems.
What does the parasympathetic system do?
Slows down involuntary processes (e.g. decreasing heart rate). Relaxes body systems and conserves energy.
What is contralateral processing?
The left cerebral hemisphere processes motor information for the right side of the body, and vice versa.
How do you test for brain death?
Shine a light on the eyes. If the parasympathetic system does not instantly constrict the pupil, it suggests that the medulla oblongata is damaged. Gag reflex, lack of movement of the eyes, blinking response.
