Neuroanatomy definitions Flashcards
gnosis
ability to perceive additional information about stimuli beyond the primary sensory modalities, occurs in association sensory cortices
prosopagnosia
inability to visually recognize familiar faces
anosognosia
inability to perceive neurological deficits
paresthesias
spontaneous or evoked psitive somatosensory symptoms that are not unpleasant or painful
dysesthesias
spontaneous positive somatosensory symptoms that are unpleasant or painful
allodynia
perception of pain to stimuli that are not normally painful
stereognosis
recognizing shape of objects by touch alone
graphesthesia
recognizing sympols drawn on the skin by touch alone sis
plegiapare
complete loss of volitional movement
palsy
weakness, does not distinguish beteween paresis and plegia
hemiparesis
unilateral weakness
paraparesis
bilateral leg weakness
quadirparesis
weakness of all four limbs
diparesis
weakness of all four limbs, worse in legs than in arms
monoparesis
weakness of one limb
focal seizure
begins in a focal cerebral cortical area
simple focal seizure
begins in a focal cerebral cortical area; causes motor or seensory abnormalitis without altering awareness
complex focal seizure
begins in a focal cerebral cortical area; causes abnormal awareness with or without motor or sensory abnormalities
generalized seizure
involves majority of cerebral cortex at onset (primary) or eventually (secondary)
causes loss of consciousness, loss of ability to sit or stand without support
provoked seizure
caused by identifiable factor like hypoglycemia
epilepsy
recurrent, unprovoked seizures
symptomatic epilepsy
caused by an identifiable factor such a brain tissue scarring from trauma
focal epilepsy
epilepsy with predominantly focal seizures
generalized epilepsy
epilepsy with predominantly generalized seizures
generalized tonic clonic seizures
diffuse tonic and clonic motor activity
absence seizures
brief episodes of unawareness without tonic or clonic activity
generalized at onset
people retain ability to stand or sit
automatisms
involuntary nonpurposeful movements such as chewing, lip smakcing, finger rubbing, picking at clothes
occurs during seizures
postictal state
diminished arousal, confusion following seizures
