neuroanatomy Flashcards
what is the brainstem
midbrain, pons, medulla
role of the midbrain
eye movements and reflex responses to sound and vision
what CN emerge from the midbrain
3 and 4
what CN emerge from the medulla
9, 10, 11, 12
if the medial aspect of the brainstem is damaged what is affected
4 Medial
1) MOTOR - corticospinal tract - contralateral paralysis
2) MEDIAL LONGITUDINAL FASCICULUS- ipsilateral internuclear opthalmoplegia
3) MEDIAL LEMNISCUS
- contralateral loss of vibration/fine touch
4) MOTOR NUCLEI
- ipsilateral cranial nerve palsies
if the side of the brainsterm is affected what structures are in danger
4 SIDE
1) SPINOTHALAMIC
- contralateral pain and temperature loss
2) SPINOCEREBELLAR
- ipsilateral ataxia
3) SYMPATHETIC
- ipsilateral horners
4) SENSORY CN V
- ipsilateral sensory loss
name the 4 motor nuclei in the midline
CN3 - oculomotor
CN4 - trochlear
CN6 - abucens
CN12 - hyglossal
CN emerge from pons
CN 5, 6, 7, 8
cerebellopontine angle lesions
acoustic neuroma
