Neuroanatomy Flashcards
The Neuron
Transmits electrical signals through NS
3 main components: cell body, dendrites, axons
CNS
Brain and spinal cord Nuclei Grey matter: neuronal cell bodies White matter: axons and glial cell bodies Tracts: Association tract: within hemispheres Commissures: between hemispheres
PNS
The somatic and autonomic nervous system
Forebrain
Cortex Basal ganglia Limbic system Thalamus Hypothalamus
Midbrain
Superior/inferior colliculi
Lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN)
Hindbrain
Medulla
Pons
Cerebellum
Medulla
Autonomic functions e.g. respiration, heart rate, arousal, digestion
Contains pyramidal decussation - motor nerves cross
Pons
Many cranial nerve synapses
Arousal modulation
REM sleep
Cerebellum
Coordinated movement
Integrates info about body with motor commands
Superior and Inferior Colliculus
Superior: visual orienting, multisensory integration
Inferior: auditory orienting
Thalamus
Sensory relay station
Involved in neural circuits with many other cortical structures
Hypothalamus
Link between nervous system and endocrine system
Hormone production
Homeostasis
Basal Ganglia
Involved in reward and goal-oriented behaviour
Limbic System
Regulation of motivated behaviours
Four F’s: fleeing, feeding, fighting and sexual behaviour
Emotion
