Neuroanatomy (3) Flashcards
what are the different constituents of the diencephalon?
Diencephalon=forebrain
thalamus (dorsal)
hypothalamus (ventral)
what is the function of the thalamus
relay sensory information to the neocortex
what is the function of the hypothalamus
controls the autonomic nervous system and motivated behaviors
what are the different constituents of the telencephalon
basal ganglia and limbic system
what is the function of the basal ganglia
mediate motor, reward, learning functions
what is the function of the limbic system
mediates emotions, memory, social behaviors
consists of medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala
what are the major landmarks on the surface of the brain
longitudinal fissure: divides the two hemispheres
central fissure: divides frontal and parietal lobes
lateral fissure: separates frontal/parietal lobes from temporal lobe
gyri: raised parts, sulci: indentations
what is the laminar organization of the cerebral cortex
six-layer organization (layer 1 right under pia mater and layer 6 is most center of brain): different types of cells in each layer
lobes: frontal (front), parietal (middle), occipital (back), temporal (side)
