neuroanatomy Flashcards
neurophysiology nuclei
is a cluster of neurons in the central nervous system, located deep within the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem.
- The neurons in one nucleus usually have roughly similar connections and functions.
- Nuclei are connected to other nuclei by tracts, the bundles (fascicles) of axons (nerve fibers) extending from the cell bodies.
basal ganglia
The basal ganglia (BG), or basal nuclei, are a group of subcortical nuclei, of varied origin, in the brains of vertebrates.
substantia nigra
The substantia nigra (SN) is a basal ganglia structure located in the midbrain that plays an important role in reward and movement.
A ganglion
A ganglion is a group of neuron cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system.
preganglionic neuron
preganglionic neurons are the neurons that arise from the central nervous system and supply the ganglia.
postganglionic neurons
postganglionic neurons are the neurons that arise from the ganglia and supply the tissues.
preganglionic neuron Vs postganglionic neuron
- cell body located in CNS and supply to ganglia of ANS
- cell body is located in the autonomic ganglia and supply to the effector organ. - arise from CNS
- arise from autonomic ganglia - supply to autonomic ganglia
- supply to the effector organ - cell body located In CNS.
- cell body located in the autonomic ganglia. - Are all myelinated B-type neurons ( both sympathetic or parasympathetic )
- are all unmyelinated C-type neurons ( both sympathetic or parasympathetic ) - synapses with one postganglionic neuron.
- synapses with more than one preganglionic neurons. - all are cholinergic neurons ( whether sympathetic or parasympathetic )
- sympathetic ones are adrenergic neurons while parasympathetic ones are cholinergic neurons.
