Neuro Final PNS Flashcards
Neuromuscular Junction
Antibodies destroy acetylcholine receptors so message cant get to muscles to contract
Sensory Intact
Motor fatigue is greater than actual weakness
= Myasthenia Gravis
Mononeuropathy
Sensory loss along nerve root from trauma
Polyneuropathy
Sensory impairments
Stocking Glove
Weaker distally then proximally
= Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy
What disorders are affected by anterior horn cell?
ALS, Post Pollio
What injury is affected by spinal roots and nerves?
Herniated Disc
An example of mononeuropathy?
Carpel tunnel Syndrome
= Median nerve entrapment
or
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Polyneuropathy
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
What is mononeuropathy
isolated nerve injury
What is a neuroma?
abnormal growth of nerve cells
What is polyneuropathy?
Peripheral nerve dysfunction secondary to trauma
Example: Diabetes, Guillian Barre, HIV, use of neurotoxic drugs/alcohol
What are the 2 responses to nerve injury?
Demyelination (from compression)
Degeneration (disease affecting longest fibers first (distal to proximal))
Neuropraxia
segmental demyelination
Axontomesis
axon damage from traction or compression
Regeneration possible
Neurotmesis
Gunshot, Stab, Avulsion
irreversible damage
Muscle becomes flaccid, atrophies, sensory loss
Where is Erb’s Palsy damage located?
C5-C6
Forward rotated shoulder
upper arm redness
Muscle atrohpy
deformity of the wrist
