Neuro Disease Flashcards
1
Q
Quadriplegia
A
- paralysis, loss of function, of both arms and legs
- spinal cord injury: physical/ chemical agent
- people don’t have complete control
- low life expectancy
2
Q
Seizure disorders (epilepsy)
A
- abnormal electrical activity in the brain
- loss of consciousness, abnormal emotions, no control over muscle
- caused by: tumor in the brain, fever, headache, genetics
- seizure unpredictable. Treatment- anti-epileptic drugs
3
Q
Alzheimers
A
- type of chronic disorder that causes problems w/ memory, thinking and behavior
- no known cause
- cause short term memory loss
- impair judgement and attitude
- no cure
4
Q
Parkinson’s disease
A
- disorders of brain, makes tumors, difficult moving.
- dopamine, create NTs, is slowly destroyed
- symptoms:slow moving, hallucinations
- no cure. Try to increase dopamine levels in brain
5
Q
AIDS
A
- disease caused by aids. Alters immune system, vulnerable to disease
- no cure
- long term affect on central nervous system
- cause cancer
6
Q
Glioma
A
- Malignant tumor of the glia tissue of the nervous system
- no known cause
- treatment: Surgery, radiation
- balance problems, headache/seizure
7
Q
Huntington’s disease
A
- Genetic disease affecting think process, talking process, and movement
- waste the brain
- mechanism: genetic disorder, progressive
- no treatment
- middle adult hood
8
Q
Cerebral palsy
A
- affects muscle ton movement because of oxygen deficiency
- occurs during accidents in the pool for children
- cannot be healed
- therapies help or drug and surgery
9
Q
Shingles
A
- painful inflammation of the nerve with a skin eruption often forming a girdle
- caused by varicella/chicken pox virus
- occurs to people who previously were infected by chicken pox
- treatment: no cure, antiviral medication
10
Q
Sciatica
A
- Pain or weakness in lower extremities
- caused by tumors and pelvic injuries
- signs&symp: difficult bending knee, pain
- likely to heal but can come back
- treatment:pain reliever, physical therapy
11
Q
Multiple sclerosis
A
- damage to myelin cells in brain or spine
- cause is unknown
- tough time having sending signals
- not fatal (probably normal lifespan)
- treatment:no treatment
12
Q
Cerebrovascular accident(CVA)
A
- blood clots block blood which carry oxygen to the brain which cause a stroke
- higher chance of survival then a stroke due to bleeding int the brain
13
Q
Neuralgia
A
- a pain in nerves
- caused by chemicals or preexisting diseases like diabetes
- medication lowers pain threshold
- not lethal gets worse over time
- treated with anticonvulsant medication or marijuana
