Chapter 12 And 13 Heart And Cardiovascular Flashcards
What are the four chambers
-2 upper chambers called atria:receiving chambers:blood pumped
In
-2 lower chambers called ventricles:discharging chambers: blood
pumped out
What is the structure of the heart
- The hollow organ composed of cardiac muscle tissue called myocardium
- covered with a loose fibrous sac called pericardium
- each side of the heart is divided onto two chambers(total of 4)
What do valves do
- Valves control the direction of blood flow
- open and close in response to pressure changes as the heart squeezes(systole) and relaxes(diastole)
What are the types of valves
- Atrioventricular valves: between atria and ventricles
- left side: bicuspid or mitral valve
- right side: tricuspid valve
- semilunar valve
What are semilunar valves
-they are between the ventricles and the large vessels that carry
blood away from the heart
-aortic SL valve on the left and pulmonary SL valve on the right
What are the types of vessels
-arteries carry blood away from the heart
-veins carry blood toward the heart
-capillaries are tiny vessels where exchange of gases, and
nutrients and waste products takes place
