Neuro 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the basic structure and function of choroid plexus?

A

There are 4 choroids(one in each ventricle of the brain) and they are modified cuboidal epithelial cells, with micro villi and basement membrane. They produce CSF and remove waste, foreign items, and excess neurotransmitters

Q

What are nodes of ranvier?

A

Joints where segments of myelin join along an axon. They allow signals to jump from node to node, rather than travelling along the entire axon length. This speeds up the rate of the signal. Astrocytes surround boxes of ranvier in the CNS

Q

What is the endoneurium?

A

The inner most layer of the peripheral nerve. It is made up of scant vascular connective tissue that surrounds Schwann cells.

Q

What is the perineurium?

A

The middle nerve layer in the PNS. It is made up of squamous epithelium like cells joined by zonula occludens and enveloped by basal lamina. It envelopes a nerve fascicles.

Q

What is epineurum?

A

The outer most layer of the peripheral nerve. It is made up of dense loose and adipose tissue and encapsulates the entire nerve.

Q

What are the types of synapses?

A

Axodendritic- between the axon of one neuron and the dendrite of the next.
Axosomatic-between the axon of one and the cell body of the next

Axoaxonic- axon of one and an internal axon segment or axon terminal of another cell.
