Integument Flashcards
What are the three layers of the integument?
Epidermis
Dermis
Hypodermis
Describe the epidermis
A keratinised stratified squamous epithelium that consists of 5 layers. They are 1 stratum basale 2 stratum spinosum 3 stratum granulosum 4 stratum luciderm 5 stratum corneum
Describe the shaft of a hair
Made up of three parts
1 medulla-dead soft keratin cells and air space.
2 cortex-dense, pigmented keratin cells.
3 cuticle-a single layer of overlapping, dead keratinised cells.
Name the steps of melanin formation
1 tyrosine 2tyrosinase 3 3,4 dihydroxy phenylalanine 4 dopaquinone 5 melanin 5 cytocrine secretion
What mode of secretion is mammary gland lipid secretion?
Apocrine secretion
What mode of secretion is mammary gland protein secretion?
Merocrine secretion
Describe the two types of sweat glands
Merocrine glands-exocytose water and electrolytes from secretory (columnar or pseudostratified cuboidal epithelium) into duct (cuboidal epithelium) opening onto the surface
Apocrine glands- secreted water lipids and electrolytes via secretory part (simple cuboidal epithelium) and through ducts (straitified cuboidal epithelium) that opens onto the epidermal surface.
What kind of secretion is a sebascious gland secretion?
Holocrine secretion of sebum
What cells make up anal sacs?
Stratified squamous epithelium
Describe the secretion of circumanal glands
Superficially are typical sebaceous glands (holocrine secretion) and deep are hepatoid cells (modified gland)
What are the layers of the hoof?
Stratum externum
Stratum medium
Stratum internium
What are the three types of neurons?
Bipolar
Unipolar
Multipolar
