Neural-Endocrine Control of Metabolism Flashcards
What determines the effect of a hormone on a tissue?
-The Effect of a hormone on a tissue is determined by the plasma concentration
How are blood concentrations of a hormone altered?
-Rate of Secretion from endocrine gland
- Bodily Processes (EX: Digestion vs Exercise have different hormones associated)
-Rate of Metabolism/ Excretion of hormone
-Quality of Transport Protein (better delivery = better utilization)
-Changes in plasma volume (Lower Volume = More effective)
What determines if a hormone affects a tissue or not?
Hormone-Receptor Interactions
-Hormones only affect tissues with receptor for that tissue
-Magnitude of effect depends on hormone concentration, # of receptors in the cell, and affinity of receptor for the hormone.
What is the difference between downregulation and upregulation in regards to hormone concentration
-Downregulation) Decrease in a number of hormone receptors in response to a high concentration of hormones in the body
-Upregulation) Increase in number of hormone receptors in response to low concentrations of hormones in the body
