Neural basis of behaviour Flashcards
What’s cognition ?
Mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
What’s biparental care ?
Biparental care occurs when male and female parents cooperate to provide care for their joint offspring.
What’s cortical magnification ?
Cortical magnification refers to the fact that the number of neurons in the visual cortex responsible for processing the visual stimulus of a given size varies as a function of the location of the stimulus in the visual field.
What’s the somatosensory cortex ?
The somatosensory cortex is the part of the brain within the cerebral cortex that receives all sensory information from various parts of the body.
What’s FAP (fixed action pattern) ?
A fixed action pattern is a predictable series of actions triggered by a cue, sometimes called the key stimulus.
Whats the tympanum ?
Architectural element located within the arch or pediment. (eardrum)
What’s aposematism ?
Aposematism is the advertising by an animal, whether terrestrial or marine, to potential predators that it is not worth attacking or eating.
What’s coevolution ?
Process of reciprocal evolutionary change that occurs between pairs of species or among groups of species as they interact with one another.
What’s stimulus filtering ?
The process of separating useful sensory information from the many thousands of stimuli present in the external environment, so that only potentially useful information is sent to the brain.
What’s the circadian clock ?
Your circadian rhythm is the pattern your body follows based on a 24-hour day — it’s the name given to your body’s internal clock. This rhythm tells your body when to sleep and when to wake up.
What’s polarized skylight ?
Skylight is polarized to different degrees depending on its location in relation to the sun. Skylight polarization patterns change over the course of the day.
