Networks - Hardware Flashcards
NIC
Network Interface Controller
Allows a device to connect to a network
Switches
Connect devices on a LAN
Receive data in frames from one device and transmit this to the device on the network with the correct MAC address
Router
Transmit data between networks (at least connected to 2 different networks)
Direct data (in packets) to their destination
Ethernet Cables
Can be used to connect devices to a LAN
Twisted pair of cables (four pairs of copper wires twisted together to reduce interference)
e.g. CAT 5E , CAT 6
Fibre Optic
Transmit data as light
No interference -> good for large distances
High performance
Coaxial cables
Single copper wire
With plastic insulation + metallic mesh -> shielding fro outside interference
How do wireless transmit data?
Radio waves
Convenient -> can move around
Cheaper -> less wires
e.g. Bluetooth , Wi-Fi
Bluetooth (wireless)
Direct connection between 2 devices on a LAN
Connection range: 10m
Bandwidth: Low
Used in: mobile/ wearable devices-> smartphones, headphones, watches
Wi-Fi (wireless)
Multiple connections to a LAN at the same time
What do you need to set up Wi-Fi
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
like a wireless switch
What do you need to connect to Wi-Fi?
Wireless NIC
Normally built - in, if not you can use a USB/HDMI dongle
