Networks Flashcards
1
Q
Advantages of a network
A
- File sharing
- Hardware sharing e.g printers
- Communication e.g. emails
- Levels of user access, in larger networks
2
Q
Disadvantages of networks
A
- Cost, e.g. wires + equipment
- Management by technical staff
- Spread of malware
- Hacking
3
Q
What is hosting
A
The storage of files and data on a web server
The web server is the host
4
Q
What does the DNS do
A
Converts the URL into an IP address from the domain name database
5
Q
What is the cloud
A
Remotely accessed storage, stored on a server connected to the internet
6
Q
Advantages of the cloud
A
- Access files from any location
- Cloud storage services back up the data for us
- Easy to share files and grant access to others
7
Q
Disadvantages of the cloud
A
- People are worried about the security
- No guarantee back ups are happening
- Data can only be accessed with an internet connection
- Have to pay a monthly fee
8
Q
Advantages of a star network
A
- One node failure doesn’t affect the others
- New nodes easily added to the switch
- tend to have a high performance as data is only sent to intended recipient
9
Q
Disadvantages of a star network
A
- If the switch fails the whole network is down
- Can be expensive due to the amount of wires and cables needed
10
Q
Advantages of a mesh topology
A
- Multiple routes so message also gets to where it needs to go
- No node is ever isolated
- One node and receive and transmit to more than one node at the same time
- new nodes can be added with out interrupting the others
11
Q
Disadvantages of a mesh topology
A
- Impractical to set up because of the multiple connections
- Many connects == lots of maintenance
