networks Flashcards
+.LAN
local area network - a small geographic area where infrastructure is owned
wan
A wide area network is created when LANs are connected , an example of a WAN is the internet
explain what a vpn is
a network that can securely connect geographically unrelated computers via the internet.
define latency (hint: packets, time)
time it takes for data to travel across the network
error rate
amount of errors that happen during data transmission
bandwidth
maximum rate of data trasfer
transmission media
data can be carried away
what is interference (hint: cables/switchs)
when cable or switch is close to electrical equipment
client server
This type of network separates computers into one of two classifications - servers and clients
A server is a computer that manages and stores files, or one that provides services to other computers on the network. They control the network and allow other computers to share and communicate.
There is a hierachy, higher tier users get priority over lower tier users.
Best suited for a large company
zihans take:
managed by a server, devices connected are called clients
pros - easy to keep track of files/backup files/ and to update or install software
cons - expensive to set up, requires expertise and server dependence
peer to peer (P2P)
In peer to peer, peers store their own files, which can be accessed by other peers on the network (like the school system)
In peer to peer, there is no hierachy chain, everyone gets the same level of priority
Also, p2p are best suited to smaller organisations
Advantages of P2P
Easy file sharing
Reduced costs
Easily add new users
Advantages of Client Server
Backups and network security is controlled centrally
Users can access shared data which is centrally controlled
Disadvantages of P2P
Files and folders cannot be centrally backed up
Ensuring that viruses are not added to the network is the responsibility of each user
There is little security
Disadvantages of Client Server
Specialists needed to setup
If any part of the network fails, alot of disruption can occur
Factors that affect performance of a network
The number of devices on the network
