Networking Hardware Devices Flashcards
What is a Hub
It was one of the first devices that were used to connect networks together.
Often called a Multiport Repeater
- No Intelligence in where signals are transmitted
Operating at half-duplex
- Less efficient as traffic increases
Communicating at 10/100Mbit/s
Legacy Devices
What is a Switch ?
More intelligent than a Hub.
Forwards traffic to the right interface based on destination
ASIC - Application Specific Integrated Circuit
Vary in size depending on intended use
Two Categories
- Unmanaged
- Managed
What is a Router?
Used to route traffic from one subnet to another
- Makes forwarding decisions based on the destination IP
- Uses routing table inside the device
Connects multiple types of networks together
-Ex: A LAN and a WAN connected in the same router
A router inside of a switch is called a layer 3 switch
What is a Access Point?
An Access Point is a bridge that connects wired and wireless networks
A wireless router is a wireless access point and router in one
Smart forwarding of traffic
What is a Cable/DSL Modem? What does modem stand for?
Modem stands for modulator/demodulator
Converts between analog and digital
First used standard phone line
- Dial up
Cable modems are still used today

What is an ONT?
An Optical Network Terminal are just like Cable Modem but for fiber technology
- Converts signal from optical to electrical and vice versa
- Optical Network Terminal sits between you Internet service provider and your ethernet devices
What is an NIC?
A Network Interface Card connects the device to the network.
A smartphone also contains a network card
What is a Patch Panel?
A patch panel is used for large network.
Endpoint for connecting from a persons desk to switch/router
Contains no Intelligent circuitry
What is PoE? What is it’s function? Where is it found?
Power over Ethernet is the use of sending power over an ethernet connection.
Common for security cameras, VoIP telephones.
Capability often found in switch
- Power over ethernet injector can add capability
- Placed between switch and end device
Multiple PoE standards based on how much power it can deliver
Please tell me the Power to Powered Devices for each standard.
IEEE 802.3af
IEEE 802.3at
IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3)
IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4)
IEEE 802.3af 12.95W Static Cameras, VoIP Phones
IEEE 802.3at 25.5W PTZ Cameras, Alarm Systems
IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3) 51W Video Conf Equipt. Advanced WAP
IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4) 71.3W Laptops, Screens
What is a firewall?
A firewall protects traffic, usually sits on router or dedicated hardware
Filter by
-Port Number
-Application
What is SDN?
A software defined networking is a newer approach to managing networking hardware
Uses Software-based controllers & API’s to communicate with the underlying hardware
Multiple Benefits:
- Control the entire network via a single pane of glass
- Control hardware from multiple vendors from a central console
- Instead of controlling each hardware piece individually
