Network Types and Internet Connection Types Flashcards
Name all the different computer Networks
LAN, WAN ,MAN, PAN
What is a PAN?
Personal Area Network - Covers a small area (small room) - Bluetooth or USB
Devices and Peripherals
- Wireless Headset
- Printer
What is a LAN?

Can range from two computers to thousands
Mix of wired and wireless devices
Wireless Local Area network WLAN if it is entirely wireless
What is a VLAN?
A Virtual Local Area Network is used to partition a LAN in to logical groups.
This allows engineers to duplicate settings within the LAN without having to change every single network
What is a MAN?
A Metropolitan Area Network connects a computer network across multiple buildings.
This is used to connect several LAN’s together for form a bigger network
What is a WAN?
A Wide Area Network covers an area wider than a LAN. From Multiple Buildings to Different Countries.
The Most Popular WAN:
The Internet
What is a SAN?
A Storage Area Network is a dedicated high speed network that delivers shared pools of storage devices.
Servers can access storage as if it was internal
What are the two types of Internet Options
- Connect our network to the internet
- Multiple Options Available depending on: Proximity to urban center, Maturity of Local internet Service Provider
What is DSL?
DSL is a Digital Subscribers Lines
- Uses existing Wires
- ADSL: Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines
Speed up to 100Mbpps
- Average consumer speed up to 7MBPS
Internet speed will decrease as you increase distance from your internet service provider
What is Cable?
Internet is passed though a Coax Lines, Traditionally used for TV, Internet, TV, Phone
Uses a standard called DOCSIS
- Data over Cable Service Interface Specification
Speeds Depending on ISP
What is Fiber?
Optic Fiber is directly connected to your network
Cables can be used for data/voice/video
1Gbps internet access speed
Talk about Satellite?
Communication with a Satellite
Remote Sites
High cost compared to cable options
-Lower Speeds
-Higher Latency
Multiple Companies/ISP investing into Satellite Networks
Talk bout Cellular Networks
5G has made it possible to get fast home internet from cellular networks
Speeds up to 1Gbps
Technology was also there before
- Performance was often not worth it
What is a WISP? How is it set up? Who uses It?
A Wireless Internet Service Provider are very popular in rural regions where there are no wired internet connections
WISP set up towers at the highest points in a rural area.
