2
Q

Explain the function of router

A

A router is a switching device for networks, which is able to route network packets, based on their addresses, to other networks or devices. Among other things, they are used for Internet access, for coupling networks or for connecting branch offices to a central office via VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Q

what is a gateway in networking?

A

A computer that sits between different networks or applications. The gateway converts information, data or other communications from one protocol or format to another. A router may perform some of the functions of a gateway.

Q

Explain the function of DHCP

A

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway

16
Q

What are the differences between the functions of a bridge and a switch

A

Bridge ———– Switch
Packet switching is software based——— Packet switching is hardware based
Only 2 ports ———— Many ports
Cannot perform error checking ———- Can perform error checking
May not have a buffer ——– Has buffers

17
Q

What are the different types of cables in a wired connection?

A

I. Twisted pair cable- • Used for telephone and network connections Standard telephone lines and Ethernet cables use twisted pair
II. Coaxial Cable- A copper-cored network cable (Thick center wire) 80x more than twisted pair. Used to deliver
television signals as well as to connect
computers in a network
III. Fiber-optic cable-Transmits data as pulses of light through tiny tubes of glass. Replacing twisted-pair cable telephone lines

18
Q

What are the functions of intermediary devices?

A
  • Regenerate and retransmit communication signals
  • Maintain information about pathways that exist through the network and internetwork
  • Notify other devices of errors and communication failures
  • Direct data along alternate pathways when there is link failure
  • Classify and direct messages according to priority
  • Permit and deny flow of data based on security settings
