NETWORKING EQUIPMENT Flashcards
What is an endpoint?
Any computer connected to a network. (nodes/clients)
Explain the function of router
A router is a switching device for networks, which is able to route network packets, based on their addresses, to other networks or devices. Among other things, they are used for Internet access, for coupling networks or for connecting branch offices to a central office via VPN (Virtual Private Network).
what is a gateway in networking?
A computer that sits between different networks or applications. The gateway converts information, data or other communications from one protocol or format to another. A router may perform some of the functions of a gateway.
What is the function of a DNS?
A domain name system servers convert URLs and domain names into IP addresses that computers can understand and use
Explain the function of DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway
Explain the function of a proxy server
A proxy server is a system or router that provides a gateway between users and the internet. Can play the role of a web server
What is a hub?
Any central device that connects endpoints to a network
OR
The actual legacy device that was used in the past
What is a switch?
An intelligent central device that uses packet switching to forward data packets between devices based on mac addresses
What is a modem?
Modulator Demodulator converts analog signals to digital and vice versa
What is a firewall
a network security device or software that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization’s previously established security policies.
What is the function of a Network interface card?
A hardware component that enables computers to connect to networks
What is the function of a repeater
Amplifies and retransmits signals in a network
What is a bridge?
A network bridge is a computer networking device that creates a single, aggregate network from multiple network segments.
What is the difference between a bridge and a router?
Bridge- data layer, MAC Address
Router-Network layer, IP Address
Give examples of resources in networks
• A file • A folder • A printer • A disk drive • Or just about anything else that exists on a computer.
