Networking Flashcards
What is a Network Interface Card?
A network interface card (NIC) is a hardware component, which is installed on a computer so it can connect to a network.
What is a MAC Address?
A MAC Address (Media Access Control) is a unique identifier assigned to a network interface card for use as a network address in communications within a network. A switch is used to find the pc through its MAC address.
What is a Switch?
A switch is a device that connects devices (such as computers, printers, wireless access points) in a network to each other, and allows them to ‘talk’ by exchanging data packets.
What is a Router?
A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks. It manages traffic between these networks by forwarding data packets to their intended IP addresses.
What is a Bridge?
What is a Wireless Access Point?
A Wireless Access Point (WAP) is a hardware device that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard such as, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
What is a Modem?
A device that encodes digital computer signals to analog telephone signals and vice versa which allows computers to communicate over a phone line.
What is a Firewall?
A Firewall is a network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic. It is used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet.
What is wire transmission?
Wire transmission transfers data through wire and cables.
What are Network Cables?
Networking cables are networking hardware used to connect one network device to other network devices or to connect two or more computers to share printers, scanners, etc.
What are wired transmission types?
Optical Fiber Cable
Twisted Pair Cable
What are twisted pair cables?
A pair of insulated copper wires twisted to form a spiral. The twisting reduces the amount of interference from other cabling. There are two types of twisted pair cables. Shielded and unshielded twisted pair cables.
What’s the difference between UTP and STP?
Unshielded twisted pair cables are more prone to interference from the environment. Shielded twisted pair cables have a metal cover that reduces interference. It provides better performance but is more expensive.
What are Optical Fiber cables?
Optical Fiber cables are thin fiber of glass or plastic that transfer data through light waves at high speeds. There are two modes; Single and Mutli mode.
What is single mode for optical fiber cables?
Optical fiber that transmits data through a laser which allows only for one path for light to transmit. It is used over long distances.
