What is a network?
It is a group of two or more computers connected together.
What does connecting computers together allow the users to do?
Share resources eg printers, scanners and software.
How can you connect the computers?
It can be wireless, fibre optic cables, microwave or radio links, satellite communication or all of the above.
What are the three types of network topology?
Bus, ring and star.
What does LAN stand for?
Local area network.
What is a LAN?
A network where all the computers are relatively close together.
Give examples of a LAN network.
Cluster of building such as schools or universities or one building with offices.
What is used to connect devices to a LAN network?
A switch or hub.
What may a LAN be connected to?
It may be connected to a WAN.
Give an exact of a LAN connected to a WAN.
Computers in a school connected to the internet.
List some advantages of using a LAN.
Computers can share printers and scanners which reduces costs.
Programs can be shared.
You can access your information from any computer.
List some disadvantages of using a LAN network.
The cost of installing the cables and peripherals.
You may need to hire someone who is specially trained to run the network.
Security is hard because if one computer gets a virus it can spread across the network
