Computer Software 2 Flashcards
What is a program that comes with the computer system called?
A systems program
What does a systems program do?
It performs specific tasks while the computer is operational.
What tasks does a systems program do?
It can back up files, check for viruses or run a compression program.
List some of the applications carried out by the utility program.
Bisk defragmenting, task scheduling, backup, restoring data.
Where are files stored?
On a hard drive.
What happens when lots and lots of files are saved?
They fragment.
What is the process called when the hard drive has to find all the data and price it together?
defragmenting
What is task scheduling?
This is where the CPU will allocate time for each task.
What does the task scheduling do?
It makes programs seem to run at the same time.
What can you use the task scheduler for?
You can use it to perform certain tasks at specific times.
What is a backup?
A backup copies files and programs in case one of them becomes corrupt.
How often should backups be made?
They should be made at regular intervals so that you have a up to date version of the files and programs.
Where should a backup of your software be stored?
They should be stored separately from the computer.
What are the different types of backups that can be made?
Full backup, differential backup, incremental backup, journal file and hard copy.
What is a full backup?
This copies all files to provide a complete record of the data.
What is a differential backup?
This copies files that have changed since the last full backup.
What is a incremental backup?
This copies only those files that have changed since the last backup. This could be a full backup or a previous incremental backup.
What is a journal file?
This provides a record of the operations since the previous backup.
What is a hard copy?
As a last resort a copy stored on paper.
What is restoring data mean?
This is where you replace corrupt files with the backed up files.
What can antivirus software do?
It can detect and quarantine or remove malicious software from the computer system.
Where are antivirus softwares stored?
In the hard drive.
Where does an antivirus software monitor?
It monitors the computer system.
What happens if a virus is detected?
The antivirus software prevents the file from running and sends a warning to the user.
What disision does an antivirus software give the user when it sends a warning message?
The user can choose to quarantine or remove the software.
What is disinfection?
The removal of any viruses.
What is quarantine?
It is isolating any files that are suspected of containing a virus.
Why do you need to regularly update your antivirus software?
To protect against any new viruses.
