Network Segmentation Flashcards
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network - A group of devices in the same broadcast domain.
What is a virtual LAN?
Virtual Local Area Network - Separated logically inside the switch instead of physically, like a normal LAN.
What is a VLAN trunk?
A trunk connection is a single physical connection between two switches, but it’s able to transmit multiple VLANs across that trunk.
What is the standard for trunking?
802.1Q, or shortened, .1Q Trunk.
How many bits can a VLAN ID be? How many VLAN unique ID’s are possible?
12 bits long, so 4094 VLANs.
What is the “normal range” of VLAN ID?
1 through 1005.
What is the “extended range” of VLAN ID?
1006 through 4094.
What are the reserved VLAN numbers?
0 and 4095.
What is the archaic trunking protocol, used before 802.1Q?
ISL (inter-switch link).
During what process of network communication is the VLAN frame added/removed?
The VLAN tag is added to the Ethernet frame at the first Trunk. It then passes through to the second VLAN trunk. The VLAN tag is then removed from the Ethernet frame at the second trunk, and travels to it’s destination.
