what is a IP address
a unique public address for the router or gateway of a network - can be static or dynamic
how do routers use IP addresses
direct data packets from one router to another
- they sit between local networks and the internet joins them together with public IP address for Internet and private IP address for local network
- local data passed onto Internet by router - received + directed
who assigns they IP address for your whole network

when are dynamic addresses assigned
from a list of available addresses, at time when required - IPv4 doesn’t have enough static addresses for everyone
what is a IPv4 address
4 numbers , stored in 8 bits, separated by full stop
why was IPv6 developed
IPv4 system running out of possible addresses - due to high rise in networked devices
