Network Flashcards
How can networks be connected?
Using LAN or WAN
What is a network?
a number of computers linked together using wireless /wired technology
Use of network
allows computer to share resources
Advantages of network
1) Files can be shared and accessed throughout the same network
2) Security can be managed centrally
Disadvantages of a network
1) Viruses can spread quickly throughout a network
2) Set up costs can be expensive(servers, network cards ad routers need to installed)
LAN stands for
Local Area Network
Explain LAN
A LAN(Local Area Network) is spread over a small geographical area such a a building or an office
Benefit of LAN
The devices can be used in a single network connection
Expand WAN
Wide Area Network
Explain WAN
WAN ( Wide Area Network) Spreads over a large geographical area on a global scale
What does WAN need?
Telecommunications link/ fibre optic cable or a satellite to allow computers on the network to communicate
Expand WWW
World wide web
Describe WWW
is an application which uses the internet
Expand URL
Uniform Resource Locator
What is URL?
A website that has a unique address
Expand HTML
HYPERTEX MARKUP LANGUAGE
What technology is used to communicatein the internet
Wi-Fi
Explain Bluetooth
Uses short range wireless technology to connect two devices
For devices to begin transferring data between each other they have to be paired
Explain Wi-Fi
a wireless medium that allows devices to connect and communicate using radio waves
Advantage of Wifi
no need for cable
Disadvantages of Wifi
limited distance on how far the signal can travel
Explain Optical Fibre
consists of a bundle of glass strands, each strands carries one data signal which means many data signals can be sent at one time
Advantages of Optical Fibre
signals cannot be interfered and it is very secure
Disadvantages of Optical Fibre
Requires the use of repeaters for data to travel over large distances
What is a router
A hardware device that connects a number of networks together by either cable or wireless, to allow for data transmission
Expand NIC
Network Interface Card
Explain NIC
A electronic board installed in a computer to allow it to connect to a network
It has a port to allow a network cable(Ethernet) to be attached
What is File server
A powerful computer on a network, it stores user’s files
What is a Switch
A switch allows a large number of computers on a network to be connected
checks the destination of data it receives, and ensures it is forwarded to the right computer
What is a network cable
It physically connects a computer to a network
Explain Bus Network
In this network, computer are connected to a main cable known as a backbone
Data can travel both directions along the backbone
How to add a new computer to the Bus Network
The cable is attached to the backbone
What happens if a cable attached to the backbone fails?
Only the computer of the cable will fail to operate
Explain Star Network
Computers are connected by their own cable to a file server
All Data on the network passes through the file sever
What happens if a cable fails in the Star Network
it will only affect that specific computer
Explain Ring Network
Each computer is directly connected to two other adjacent computers to form a ring
All data travels in one direction by visiting each computer in turn until it reaches its intended destination
How to add a new computer to the Ring Network
Cable between two existing computers has to be broken and each part of the broken cable attached to the new computer
Advantage of Bus Network
If cable is attached to the backbone fails, only that computer will fail to operate
Disadvantage of Bus Network
If the backbone/main cable breaks all communication breaks down
Advantage of Star Network
If cable fails, it will only affect the computer it is connected to and the rest of the network will operate as normal
Easy to add new machines
Disadvantage of Star Network
If server fails the network fails
Expensive cabling/instalments
Advantage of Ring Network
Not reliant on file server
Disadvantage of Ring Network
If a cable fails, the whole network is affected
To add a new computer it is more difficult than a bus or star
Use of Terminators on the bus network
Stop the signal returning/bouncing back down the backbone cable and absorbs the data
