Nervous Tissue Flashcards
What is nervous tissue?
Considered to be “excitable” due to its ability to transmit electrical impulses
What is the composition of nervous tisue?
Consists of neurons (cells that convey electrical impulses)
and a number of accessory cells called gilial cells
How do neurons transmit their signals to other cells?
Through chemical messengers called neurotransmitters
What are the functions of neuroglia?
-maintain physical structure of neural tissue
-repair neural tissue framework after injury
-performs phagocytosis
-provides nutrients to neurons
-regulate the composition of interstitial fluid surrounding neurons
What makes up a neuron?
Dendrite, Cell body, Axon, Myelin sheath, neuron muscle synapse, muscle, axon terminals
