Nervous Tissue Flashcards
What is the main function of nervous tissue?
Communication.
What is nervous tissue composed of?
Neurons - carries electrical impulses.
Glia - provides support and protection for neurons.
Where is nervous tissue found?
The brain, spinal cord and nerves.
What is the general structure of a neuron?
Dendrites - receives information.
Cell body - contains the nucleus.
Axon hillock - triggers an action potential.
Axon - transmits an action potential.
Axon terminals - releases neurotransmitters.
What are axons made of?
Myelin sheaths and nodes of Ranvier.
What is myelin secreted by?
Oligodendrocytes (CNS).
Schwann cells (PNS).
What are neuroglia?
A matrix of cells that surrounds neurones.
What are the functions of astrocytes?
Maintains the external environment for neurones.
Forms a blood-brain barrier.
What are the functions of microglia?
What are the functions of ependymal cells?
Macrophages of the CNS.
Produces CSF.
What are the functions of satellite cells?
Supports neuron cell bodies.
