Muscle Tissue Flashcards
Describe the structure of muscle tissue.
Elongated thin cells.
The cytoplasm is packed with contractile apparatus, that shortens lengths and closes spaces.
Describe skeletal muscle.
Attaches to the skeleton.
Voluntary.
Striated - ordered contractile proteins.
Describe cardiac muscle.
Found in the heart.
Involuntary.
Striated and branched - less ordered contractile proteins.
Describe smooth muscle.
Found in organs.
Involuntary.
Non-striated - randomly ordered contractile proteins.
Small cells are surrounded by a network of collagen.
What are the function of intercalated discs?
A part of cardiac muscle.
Allows for coordinated muscle contraction.
What are intercalated discs made of?
Desmosomes - prevents separation during contraction.
Gap junctions - causes contractions to synchronise.
Describe the nuclei in each type of muscle tissue.
Skeletal - multiple, peripherally situated.
Cardiac - single and central.
Smooth - single, central and cigar-shaped.
Describe muscle contraction.
Sarcomeres contract.
Actin and myosin slide over one another.
Heat is produced.
Describe what A bands and I bands look like under a microscope.
Dark wide stripes.
Light stripes.
Describe what Z lines look like under a microscope.
Dark thin stripes.
