Nervous tissue Flashcards

1
Q

What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?

A
  • Central Nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
  • Peripheral Nervous system (Nerves, ganglia, and sensory receptors)

Q

How do nerves respond to external stimuli?

A

By generating an action potential and transmitting it to the CNS for analysis and processing.

Q

What is the cell body of a neuron?

A

Contains a nucleus and most of the cell’s organelles.

Site of neurotransmitter production

Contains a lot of microfilaments that aid in moving the neurotransmitters from the cell body to the axon terminal

6
Q

What are dendrites?

A

These are extensions of the cell body that specialize in receiving stimuli from other neurons via synapses.

7
Q

What is an axon?

A

A single long process ending at synapses that can generate and conduct action potentials

They also receive information from other cells that mainly modify the transmission to those neurons.

Q

Unipolar or pseudounipolar neuron

A

A single process that bifurcates close to the cell body with the longer branch extending to the peripheral ending and the other toward the CNS

12
Q

Anaxonic neurons

A

Many dendrites but no true axon.

DO NOT produce action potentials, but regulates electrical changes of adjacent neurons

16
Q

How are nervous components subdivided functionally?

A

Sensory neurons → afferent as they receive stimuli from the receptors throughout the body

Motor neurons → efferent because they send impulses to effector organs (glands, muscles)

17
Q

What are the types of motor nerves?

A

Somatic → under voluntary control and innervates skeletal muscle and skin

Autonomic→ involuntary activates glands, cardiac muscle and most smooth muscle

18
Q

What are interneurons

A

Forms circuits between neurons

Generally multipolar or anaxonic

19
Q

Microglia

A
  • Mobile phagocytic cells (macrophages) that are derived from monocytes
  • Smallest glial cellls
  • Stains dark with elongates nucleus and little cytoplasm
