Nervous Systems Flashcards
Peripheral Nervous System
Relays messages between CNS and sensory organs, muscles, and glands
Somatic Nervous System
A subset of the PNS
Governs voluntary activities
Consists of (1) sensory nerves that carry info from the body’s sense receptors to the CNS and (2) motor nerves that carry info from the CNS to the skeletal muscles
Autonomic Nervous System
A subset of the PNS
Governs involuntary activities
Consists of sensory nerves that convey signals from our organs to the CNS and motor nerves that convey signals from the CNS to smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and glands
Divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches
Parasympathetic Nervous System
A branch of the ANS
Rest and Digest
Sympathetic Nervous System
A branch of the ANS
Fight or flight response
(arousal, expenditure of energy)
