Nervous system structure through development Flashcards
Identify the key stages in the development of the nervous system
~17 days old, neural plate
-Endoderm (Lining of viscera)
-Mesoderm (Bone and muscle)
-Ectoderm (Skin and NS)
~22 days old, neurulation
-Neural plate, through grooves and folds, becomes neural tube (CNS) and neural crest (PNS)
-CNS formation also forms ventricular system
Differentiation
-Forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain develop
-Forebrain differentiates into telencephalic vesicles, diencephalon, and optic vesicles
Describe the key functions of the major subdivisions of the nervous system
The forebrain is responsible for a variety of functions including receiving and processing sensory information, thinking, perceiving, producing and understanding language, and controlling motor function
Midbrain functions involve movement of the body and head, as it provides passage for downward pathways for the cerebral cortex, involved in sensory processing
The hindbrain coordinates functions that are fundamental to survival, including respiratory rhythm, motor activity, sleep, and wakefulness
Recognise the role of the midbrain in sensory processing and voluntary movement.
Midbrain functions involve movement of the body and head, as it provides passage for downward pathways for the cerebral cortex. It is a channel for the spinal cord transmitting stimuli (sensory) from the head and body to the direct brain
