Nervous System Spinal Cord and Meninges Flashcards
spinal cord
column of nervous tissue extending from the medulla oblongata to the 2nd lumbar vertebra within the vertebral column
cauda equine
(horse’s tail) a fan of nerve fibers
the function of the spinal cord
carry all the nerves to and from the limbs and lower part of the body, and it is the pathway for impulses going to and from the brain
gray matter
cell bodies and dendrites - no myelin sheaths
white matter
nerve fiber tracts with myelin sheaths
meninges
3 protective membranes that surround the brain and the spinal cord
what are the 3 meninges?
dura mater, arachnoid membrane, pia mater
dura mater
the thick, outermost layer of the meninges surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord “tough mother”. contains channels that contain blood
subdural space
space below the dural membrane
arachnoid membrane
the middle layer of the 3 membranes (meninges) that surround the brain and spinal cord. Loosley attached to the other meninges by web-like fibers, so there is space for fluid between the fibers and the 3rd membrane
subarachnoid space
space below the arachnoid membrane contains CSF
pia mater
the thin, delicate inner membrane of the meninges closes to the brain and spinal cord
leptomeningeal
pertaining to the pia mater and arachnoid membranes
