Cardiovascular System Anatomy of the Heart Flashcards
heart
pump consisting of 4 chambers; 2 upper and 2 lower
2 upper chambers of the heart
atria (singulair atrium)
2 lower chambers of the heart
ventricles
pump station one (right side of the heart)
on the right side of the heart, sends oxygen-deficient blood to the lungs, where the blood picks up oxygen and releases its carbon dioxide and sends it down to the right side of the heart
pump station two (left side of the heart)
newly oxygenated blood is forced out to all parts of the body. At the body tissues, the blood loses its oxygen.
what happens once body tissues take the oxygenated blood?
on returning to the heart (station one)the blood which is now low in oxygen and rich in carbon dioxide is sent out to the lungs to begin the cycle all over again
superior venae cavae
drains blood from the upper portion of the body
inferior venae cavae
carries blood from the lower part of the body
tricuspid valve
located between the right atrium and the right ventricle; it has three (tri-) leaflets or cusps (flaps of the valves that for a one-way passage designed to keep the blood flowing in only one direction
atrium
upper chamber of the heart
ventricle
lower chamber of the heart
pulmonary valve
valve positioned between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery
pulmonary artery
artery carrying oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs
pulmonary veins
one of 2 pairs of vessels carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
mitral valve
the valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle; bicuspid valve
left ventricle
thickest walls of all four heart chambers (3 times the thickness of the right ventricular wall. Must pump blood with great force so that the blood travels through arteries to all parts of the body
aorta
largest artery in the body
aortic valve
closes to prevent return of aortic blood to the left ventricle
septa (singulair; septum)
partition or wall dividing a cavity
interatrial septum
wall between right and left atria
interventricular septum
wall between the right and left ventricles
endocardium
inner lining of the heart
myocardium
muscular middle layer of the heart
pericardium
double-layered membrane surrounding the heart
visceral pericardium
adhering to the heart
parietal pericardium
lining the outer fibrous coat
pericardial cavity
between the visceral and the parietal pericardial layers
