Nervous system pt.3 Flashcards
name the 3 parts the ear is divided into
Outer ear
middle ear
inner ear
function of the pinna? (earlobe)
Collect sound waves and direct them to auditory canal
function of auditory canal?
Transmit sound waves to the tympanic membrane
what is another word for tympanic membrane?
eardrum
what is the tympanic membrane & its function
a thin membrane the separating the outer & middle ear which converts sound waves into vibrations.
what are the ossicles and name them
Three tiny bones:
malleuous
incus
stapes
what do the ossicles do?
Amplify vibrations from tympanic membrane and transmit vibrations to inner ear
what is the purpose of the semi-circular canals
control balance
discuss the Cochlea
It is filled with fluid that starts to move due to pressure waves formed from vibrations passed into oval window from the ossicles.
Cochlea contains receptors called?
Organ of Corti which generate electrical impulses
auditory nerve function
transport impulses from cochlea to the cerebrum to be interpreted as sound.
how do we hear?
- pinna directs sound waves into auditory canal
- sound waves cause the tympanic membrane to vibrate
- vibrations will be on to the ossicles (which amplify it)
- vibrations in the ossicles will cause the oval window to vibrate
- this will cause the fluid in the inner ear to move
- this will stimulate the organ of corti which will generate an electrical impulse
- auditory nerve will take the impulse to the cerebrum
- cerebrum interprets the sound
discuss deafness
- wax build up in ear which causes the tympanic membrane to not be able to vibrate.
- damage done to ossicles (cannot vibrate)
- cells in Cochlea are damaged (loud sounds)
discuss the Tongue
- movable muscular organ
- has taste buds on the surface
- plays a role in chewing and swallowing food
- plays a role in speech
what are the 5 basic tastes
bitter
sour
sweet
salt
umami
