communication via action potentials travelling from one neuron to the next with the help of neurotransmitters
peripheral nervous system
a network of nerves that carries signals into and out of the system
central nervous system
-includes the brain and spinal cord
-processes information and creates a response that it delivers to the body

-carries impulses to and from skeletal muscles
-includes both conscious impulses and reflexes (unconscious)
anatomic nervous system
the part of the nervous system that regulates activities that are involuntary

activates fight or flight response
parasympathetic division
activates rest and digest response

activates processes in the gastrointestinal tract
