Nervous System (P2) Flashcards
What is the autonomic nervous system
- network of nerves that control your internal organs and glands
- Also it’s a involuntary system as you don’t control it consciously
What is the automatic nervous systems 2 branches
Sympathetic ANS
Parasympathetic branch
What does the sympathetic ANS do
- Activates flight or fight responce
- Increases bodily activities for survival
- e.g increase heart rate and sweat
What is the parasympathetic branch
- Activates in rest
- opposite of sympathetic ANS
What is the fight or flight responce
- When a threat is noticed , the brain Activates the sympathetic Ans
- body responds with hormones which are released into bloodstream
- Biological changes occure such as heart rate increase
- then psychological changes occur
- After threat has passed body becomes normal
What is a neuron
-A specialised cell in the body that transmits info electro chemically
What are the types of neurons
Sensory
Motor
Relay
What is a sensory neuron
Detects sensory info like touch
What is a relay neuron
Receives info from sensory and sends info to motor via synapses
What Is a motor neuron
Carries electrical signal to effector
What is a reflex arc
Allows the body to move quickly to respond to danger
What is synaptic transmission
When pre synaptic neurons convert electrical signals to chemical signals
Then the signal is detected by a post synaptic neuron
What is a neurotransmitter
The chemicals released by neurons and detected by receptor sites
What does exicitation do
-it makes post synaptic cells more likely to fire
What does inhibition do
-it makes post synaptic cells less likely to fire
