Nervous system intro Flashcards
What drugs are known to block Na channels, stop the axons from firing action potential?
Local anaesthetics:
Lidocaine
Benzocaine
Trtracaine
Cocaine
Antiepileptics :
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Lamotrigine
What cells are responsible for myelin formation?
Schwann cells in PNS
oligodendrocytes in CNS
What is multiple sclerosis?
Desease caused immune system attacking the oligodendrocytes –> loss of myelin
What is synaptic plasticity?
It involves NMDA receptors and happens when highly active synapse become stronger, the EPSP becomes larger.
Long term potentiation is one model of synaptic plasticity
What is excitotoxicity?
It is when there is too much glutamate which is toxic for neurone. They commit suicide
Guided by calcium influx through NMDA receptors
