What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
Brain and spinal cord

What is peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
Nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body and environment
Peripheral nervous system subdivisions are ?
Somatic and autonomic
What is somatic in PNS?
Serves outer areas of the body and skeletal muscle
Voluntary
What is autonomic in PNS ?
Involuntary system (heart and digestion)
What is the subdivision in autonomic for PNS ?
Parasympathetic and sympathetic
What is parasympathetic?
Decreases activation during rest and recovery
What is sympathetic ?
Increases activation to prep for activity
What is a neuron ?
Functional unit of the nervous system
What are the two types of neuron?
Motor and sensory
What are motor neurons?
Transmit nerve impulses from CNS to effector sites
What are sensory neurons?
Respond to stimuli
Transmit nerve impulses from effector site to CNS
What is a mechanoreceptors?
Sense distortion in body tissues
What is a joint receptors ?
Respond to pressure, acceleration, and deceleration of joints
